The national flag of France is a tricolor flag featuring three vertical bands colored blue (hoist side), white, and red. It is known to English speakers as the French Tricolor or simply the Tricolor.

The royal government used many flags, the best known being a blue shield and yellow Fleur-de-lis on a white background, or state flag. Early in the French Revolution, the Paris militia, which played a prominent role in the storming of the Bastille, wore a cockade of blue and red, the city’s traditional colors. According to Lafayette, white, the "ancient French color", was added to the militia cockade to create a tricolor, or national, cockade.[1] This cockade became part of the uniform of the National Guard, which succeeded the militia and was commanded by Lafayette. The colors and design of the cockade are the basis of the Tricolor flag, adopted in 1790. The only difference was that the 1790 flag’s colors were reversed. A modified design by Jacques-Louis David was adopted in 1794. The royal white flag was used during the Bourbon restoration from 1815 to 1830; the tricolor was brought back into use after the July Revolution and has been used ever since.

TThe flag of Italy (bandiera d’Italia, often referred to in Italian as il Tricolore) is a tricolour featuring three equally sized vertical pales of green, white, and red, with the green at the hoist side. Its current form has been in use since 19 June 1946 and was formally adopted on 1 January 1948.[1]

The first entity to use the Italian tricolour was the Cispadane Republic in 1797, which supplanted Milan after Napoleon’s victorious army crossed Italy in 1796. The colours chosen by the Cispadane Republic were red and white, which were the colours of the recently conquered flag of Milan; and green, which was the colour of the uniform of the Milanese civic guard. During this time, many small French-proxy republics of Jacobin inspiration supplanted the ancient absolute Italian states and almost all, with variants of colour, used flags characterised by three bands of equal size, clearly inspired by the French model of 1790.

Some have attributed particular values to the colours, and a common interpretation is that the green represents the country’s plains and the hills; white, the snow-capped Alps; and red, blood spilt in the Wars of Italian Independence. A more religious interpretation is that the green represents hope, the white represents faith, and the red represents charity; this references the three theological virtues.[2] To some, specifically people who are influenced by Italian cuisine, the green indicates olives, the white garlic, and the red tomato.
